Howdy there! My name is Alessandra Rouse, and I am a virtual graduate student at the University of North Texas pursuing a technical communications MA!
I chose technical communications because I found a unique beauty in being able to take information and make it into something digestible for others. I struggle with verbal communication on a daily basis to the point where it impedes my everyday routine, yet I still find a way to actively communicate what I am feeling, thinking, and experience despite these struggles. After completing my master’s, I hope to pivot into either UX/UI design or instructional design (ID) depending on where the road ends up taking me!
In the future, I’d love to design learning modules that help teachers with personal development (PD) and help structure courses that are bound to capture engagement and spark learning within children. While I am still fairly new to technical communications and ID, I have been spending my free time taking courses to help further my understanding of UX, and watching YouTube tutorials over how to learn various programs such as HTML, XML, Markdown, and more.
I carry over skills in project and content management from my time as a shift supervisor for Starbucks Coffee Company, and have extensively spent my time trying to develop capability and talent among my peers. Working cross-functionally for an extended period of time has allowed me to see how design plays a role in innovation, as well as how my role as a leader and communicator sets the standard for what I expect from my team and from myself. I wanted to pursue this project to develop my proposal writing skills, apply my knowledge to a material product, and develop my professional/personal portfolio.
